How To Install Miata Cockpit Seatbelt Tower Brace (NA or NB)

In this video Alex Perrucci demonstrates how to install a Cobalt cockpit seatbelt tower brace for an MX-5 Miata. The cockpit brace goes in between the seat belt towers behind the seats. This is for the 1990 to 2005 Miata, so for the NA or NB.

This is similar to the stock seat belt tower brace but it is a better looking, more solid piece. This has a full metal construction and a nice black powder coat finish with the cobalt logo front and center.

Let's start the install process. The first thing we're going to do is remove the seat belt cap. It just pulls off by hand. Next we'll remove this 14 millimeter that secures the seat belt. It is supposed to be a 14 millimeter but in this case it is a 17. Next, we need to remove the B-Pillar trim here and then this varies from Miata to Miata based on how messed with your car has been or whether it is completely stock. On this car, the only thing preventing us from getting the B-Pillar off right now is the rubber molding that runs along the door channel, so we're going to pull that back. You might have a 10 millimeter screw that goes in the side, around where the soft top sits. The B-Pillar trim itself is just held in by clips. Once everything is removed you can pull it back and out of the way. We are going to remove it from the car so we can drill a one inch hole for the new cockpit brace to sit in.

Once you've got the B-Pillar trim out of the way, we need to remove this 10 millimeter bolt and this bolt on the bottom of the seat belt retractor. That way we can pull the seat belt retractor out of the way. This is going to be so we can get our hands in here to install the hardware that tightens down the cockpit brace. Okay, once you have the B-Pillar trim dropped on both sides of the car, as well as the seat belt tensioners have been moved out of the way, we're going to take the hardware that was supplied in the kit. We're going to take a bolt and a lock washer. Drop a lock washer onto each bolt and now we're going to take our cockpit brace and put it across the seat belt towers here. Drop the bolts in and put our nuts in up through the bottom where the hole is now that the seat belt tensioners are out of the way. So we're going to get this on, get the brace bolted down secure and then install.
